ACTIVITIES

Lochaber is known as the Outdoor Capital of the UK.  Set at the foot of Ben Nevis, the UK's highest mountain, is the main town, Fort William.  Lochaber offers year round activities, including climbing the UK's highest mountain (Ben Nevis), mountain biking, water sports, hiking, skiing and snow-boarding,  all in stunning scenery.  A short drive just north of Fort William takes you to Nevis Range where you can take a gondola ride up the mountain called Aonach Mhor.

Take the Jacobite Steam Train (also known as the Harry Potter Train) from Fort William to Mallaig or take the normal scheduled train, which travels the same route, through beautiful scenery and across the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct.  Alternatively, drive to Glenfinnan to watch the steam train travel across the viaduct.  Glenfinnan has a visitor centre.  You can climb the Glenfinnan monument built in 1815 to mark the spot where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised the standard in the 1745 Jacobite rebellion.  Mallaig is a fishing settlement definitely worthy of a visit plus you can take a number of ferries from here, including to Skye.  There are beautiful sandy beaches in the area, such as at Arisaig from where you can also take a passenger ferry to the Small Isles of Eigg, Muck and Rhum.

There are several wildlife boat trips on offer in the area, including from Fort William on Loch Linnhe, the sea loch closest to the cottage, and from Oban, which is about 50 minutes drive south.  Oban is a very busy harbour town offering numerous ferries to various Inner Hebridean islands.

Take the Corran Ferry (2 miles north) to visit the beautiful Ardnamurchan Peninsula to enjoy woodland walks, remarkable wildlife and stunning views from the west side out to numerous Hebridean islands, especially from the Ardnamurchan Lighthouse.  From Lochaline, take the 15 minute ferry to Fishnish on the Isle of Mull.

Glencoe is known for its haunting past and its wild beauty.  You will almost certainly drive through it to reach Onich.  Find out about Glencoe at the National Trust Visitor Centre, and the Glencoe Folk Museum.

At Woodlands Glencoe, which is only about 3 miles south of the cottage, you can enjoy a round of golf (9 hole course), a segway tour, archery, and you can hire an e-bike.  Other bike hire is available in the area.
